Shakespeare's Portrayal of Two Different Kings Henry V and Richard III
Shakespeare has written many plays covering the history of the Elizabeth age, particularly the civil war, which was the most prominent interest of contemporary writers in those days. "The Tragedy of King Richard III" and "Henry V" lie in the play category where the author reproduces the Elizabeth Age with its significant features like battles, kingship, and throne while portraying the titular characters with individual personalities. The two Elizabethan monarchs, Richard III and Henry V, represent two different rulers of Shakespeare's age with similar intelligence and charismatic powers while covering a portion of history with more theatrical features.
The two kings, Richard III and Henry V, have different portrayals in their respective plays with similar authority, intelligence, and control. Both attempted to gain power by other means. Henry V was a noble ruler with good intentions for his people, who trusted him and loved him. On the contrary, Richard III endeavored to gain supremacy by hook or crook. Henry V planned to attack France after their abusive letter. He won the battle with fewer troops and prayed to god. Besides, he marries Catherine from France and sets his rule on both kingdoms (Shakespeare 97). It shows his superior leadership and good Christian heart.
In contrast, Richard III spread fear and violence to gain his objective. He married a noble lady by killing her husband to maintain authority. After that, he killed her and his brother, whom he accused as the murderer of the noble lady's husband. His purpose in killing them was to marry his niece to claim the throne (Shakespeare 155). Henry V succeeded in winning their subjects' trust through his constant efforts to ensure their prosperity and security. They devotedly supported all his decisions, which elevated the character of the king. Richard III creates considerable insecurity in public. People respected him because they feared him without any sense of devotion (Shakespeare 186). Similarly, both kings continued their kingships with their passions; Henry V had a strong moral sense and noble heart, while Richard III had extreme immorality and benefits for people's welfare. However, both share a similar level of intellect and capability of kingship to influence people in two different ways.
