Based On the Novel "Housekeeping" By Robinson Marilynne
The novel "Housekeeping" by Robinson Marilynne is a story that focuses on the lives of two orphans, Ruth, the narrator, and her sister, called Lucille Stone. They reside in a remote lakeside town called Fingerbone, Idaho. The two sisters have been abandoned and are being taken care of by various relatives. Ruth has undergone many experiences, and I would ask several questions to gain more insights about the nature of existence as Ruth is. The first question is whether she was feeling lonely, and if this clouded her judgment in regards to choosing the relatives they would want to live with and that they were not merely taking advantage of her. As a response, Ruth would reveal that her aunt, Sylvie, did have good intentions due to her behavior. For instance, in the novel, the narrator reveals that "yet I was reassured by her sleeping on the lawn, and now and then in the car, and by her interest in all newspapers, irrespective of their dates, and by her pork-and-bean sandwiches" (Robinson 54). Even though she felt lonely and abandoned, she was happy that she had someone willing to take care of her and Lucille.
Another question that I would ask Ruth is why she considered running away as the solution and burning down the house rather than facing the townspeople. She could respond that the Fingerbone community is not used to the idea of self-sufficient women who are homeless.
