My Points on Active Reading
Through time, countless of scholars, educators, leaders and laymen alike have stressed out how important it is to “actively listen” to someone during a conversation. However, despite its seeming simplicity, actively listening is much more complicated since the listener has to take into account a lot of distractions, non-verbal cues, and the like. Fortunately, messages could also be communicated through text. And while reading is much more concise and straightforward than the mechanics of listening, the art of “active reading” is still difficult. Some of the reasons for this difficulty is the fact that every information that you extract is based on a static page (or media) that leaves you to your own sense and this is the primary difficulty that every reader has to deal with. In the succeeding sections, some of the techniques that I use to actively read would be discussed.
Asking, Marking, and Re-reading
Simply put, active reading means “reading something with a determination to understand and evaluate it for its relevance to your needs” (The Open University). In my case, I make sure that I truly understand the point of the author and that I learn something from the text itself. In order to do this, I usually start my reading process by trying to find some “exploratory questions” whether given by my teacher or in the net. This would be helpful as it narrows down my focus on identifying key points later on.
