We Are In a Race Against the Machine
Over the last two decades, human beings have made numerous inventions and discoveries to improve their lives. For that reason, most people depend on modern technology in almost all activities. In fact, humans seem to depend on computers more than their efforts. The advent of technology has instigated humans to create computers and IT programs that function in a specific way. Therefore, a slight mistake in encoding the commands might be a hindrance towards the accomplishment of set objectives. Arguably, the human brain is more effective in resolving problems than computers and other forms of technology. Besides, the human brain has a larger capacity for accommodating information than the memory of a computer. On the contrary, computers are superior to the human brain on the basis of speed and retrieval of information. The emergence of new technology has resulted in the automation of most tasks that people would undertake, and, thus likely to replace human labor.
The concept of man being in a race with machines is more prevalent during the time of delicate retrievals and economic recession. In fact, people have to accept that machines are more effective in undertaking tasks, especially in industries. For instance, the use of computers is more efficient in controlling warfare weapons. Controlling how states fight enemies is an appropriate example of how technology has restructured and influenced change in the economy (Sheridan 272). Conversely, the proliferation of modern forms of technology has resulted in a massive loss of jobs. In the future, robots and other forms of computer systems are likely to replace human beings in the workplace.
The concept of man versus machine has been existent since the industrial revolution era. Research suggests that modern development results in fragile recoveries and economic downturns. For instance, most organizations have adopted mechanization of tasks, hence causing the restructuring of the economy. Carr 428) argues that most jobs that were immune to automation have faced numerous threats in the current era of exponential enhancement of performance of new forms of technology. For instance, most companies have adopted an electronic method of keeping records in replacement of the traditional bookkeeping. Accordingly, it is apparent that most industries have realized that machines can perform better than human beings.
Today, most organizations have adopted the use of machines for tasks that were traditionally meant for human workers. Moreover, tractors have replaced workers in most agricultural farms. Besides, industries have mechanized tasks to facilitate the effectiveness of business operations. In the future, it is likely that most companies will mechanize operations and reduce the overall number of workers. According to Sheridan, machines are likely to dominate the economy and human beings will have to look for alternative sources of income (272). Arguably, robots are faster and more efficient, thus making them superior than humans. As a result of increased mechanization, it is likely that humanity will be enslaved by computers and robots.
