The Uniqueness of Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson had a unique style of writing. Even though many people did not understand Dickinson's writing style, she still became very popular for her slant rhyme, capitalization, and dash marks used throughout all her work. Many of Dickinson's themes in each poem consisted of death, immortality, love, and religion. Of course, some of her writing choices stemmed from living in isolation from the world and losing people she loved growing up. Emily Dickinson was a courageous, influential poet. Dickinson's poetry is characterized by various emotions and expressions, making it unique from the conventional writing that the previous authors and poets had done. Therefore, Dickinson opened up a new era of literature since she could make poetry to a more meaningful edge than most books through generating few sentences (Oberhaus, 152). It is also vital to acknowledge that Dickson's unique personality made her successful in writing a creative poem that even challenges the views of religion and living by adding a different view on how life should look like. Therefore, this paper will analyze different aspects that make Emily Dickinson's poetry unique and reshape a new poetry era.
In any literature, the authors and poets always follow a specific path to achieve a coherent price. However, this is not Dickinson's case since she applied a different pathway by applying various techniques in the poem. Rather than just telling a story, Dickinson wrote her poem in the form of a first-person view as if she is the one experiencing what she is writing. An example is a poem she wrote is "Because I Could Not Stop for Death," which she wrote in 1863 (Finnerty, 210). The poem describes a woman who escaped death her entire life since she could stop what she was doing. Eventually, death catches up with her and tells her to come with him. In the same carriage, death also accompanied immortalities, with the horses going to eternity as well. In the poem, Dickinson twisted the poem to make herself the character in the story. This technique makes the reader feel like it is a real-life story, and it is an actual person who went through these events (Oberhaus, 150). Though the poem is all fake, Dickinson's personification of death and immortality as human beings creates a unique dimension of the poem.
Another unique technique is the genius syntax and the words which Dickinson uses in her poetry. Dickinson tends to use a different form of vocabulary in telling a story that is not related to the main theme of the poem. For instance, in the poem, "My Life had stood – a Loaded Gun," Dickinson tries to give her thoughts about a previous love affair and sexual relationship with a man (Finnerty, 217). She describes that she is the loaded gun that is waiting to go off while the person to fire the gun is the man (1-8), which corresponds to the fact that she needs him to produce an orgasm. The syntax in the poem is vital since she does not directly allude to sex, but rather, she applies metaphors and analogies in describing her feelings, emotions, and thoughts.
