Reading response: Origin of Digital Computing: The Object of Linguistic
Digital computing, according to Alan Turing, leaves no clear path or an understanding as to how he managed to come up with his projections, speculations, and theory. His work was so original that it looks confusing. If one is to understand modern computing, it will not happen without locating the history and the ideas that led to its realization. Digital computing has been realized due to innovation. When it was starting to take the course, there were several computation aids which are now called analog. The paper is a response to the Origin of digital computing and the object of Linguistics.
Devices seemed to take a new dimension of serious evolution when an arithmometer was introduced in 1820 by Thomas de Colmar (Zenil, 2013, pp. 24). I find this as one of the complex devices to have evolved in the early 18s. It took as long as 60 years to become usable, but it is worth recognizing since it marked a new dimension in mechanical calculating engines. Two views can be used to understand the evolution of computers, the technocentric view, and the user-centric view. Technocentric view privileges the generations of technologies as they have evolved (Zenil, 2013, pp. 24). In this view, it means that changes were being welcomed since each technology superseded its predecessor technology.
According to the user-centric view, the technologies have specific human activities that aim to replace; among them are calculation, communication, automatic computation, and information management (Zenil, 2013, pp. 25). If the generations of technology are arranged chronologically, some important features would be missed.
