One of the Most Divisive Topics in U.S.
In the United States (US), gun control is one of the most divisive topics. In the wake of increased school mass shootings and other gun-related violence, there have been calls for stringent gun control policies in the country. However, gun ownership is a constitutionally protected right that ensures that good citizens can defend themselves from criminals with guns.
The Constitution protects gun ownership. The Second Amendment protects Americans' right to own guns for protection (Stroebe et al. 2). This is an inherent fundamental right because, in the face of danger, guns allow people to protect themselves. Any efforts to limit gun rights through strict gun control policies would be an infringement of the Constitution and the right to self-defense.
In addition, while guns are used in acts of violence, the problem is not with gun ownership but with people using guns. As such, gun control should not focus on limiting legal gun ownership but on limiting access for people on the government’s watchlist or people with mental illnesses (...
