The difference between Kapuscinksi and the average person could be summed up in an anecdote. One evening he was drinking (heavily, as usual), in a bar in a so-called "Third-World backwater" when a wild-eyed man barged in and shouted: "They're killing anyone who goes down that road. Stay away!" Kapuscinki belted down his drink and rushed down the road to see what was happening.
What do you think makes a writer like this so different from one who prefers to spend their time behind the desk? Was Kapuscinski foolish or brave? Are you willing to venture headlong into danger to discover the truth? Can you relate any anecdotes in which you placed yourself in danger for the sake of your own art?
