Reading#1: Gardens, History and the Designer: Contributions to Historiography
In this text, Ian Henderson argues that while discussing the garden history, the physical attributes are not paid any attention to. Instead, the focus is always on their visual and artistic beauty, and no one concentrates on the size and structure of gardens. I support Ian Henderson’s point of view since the physicality (where it exists) is not the only thing one should take into account while talking about gardens and their history. In addition, we should always observe how their design has been made, and what is their size and area. The author is of the view that historians generally view gardens of the modern era as “benefit of meaning” (p. 42). However, the history of gardens is not complete until or unless their designs and engineering attributes are not discussed.
Reading#2: Lexicon as Theory: Some Definitions at the Edge of San Francisco Bay
Generative Lexicon (GL) is a theory of linguistics which focuses on the distribution of compositionality in natural language. According to Jane Wolff, the “perceptions, observations, descriptions and explanations” (p. 16) can be colored if the meaning of every word is presented in a better way. Thus, it can be said that the meaning or definition is the first step to understanding different landscapes and their physical features. Engineers may have to get involved in the process of testing the landscape for its architecture. In addition, a finite number of words in the language have to be learned by heart in order to enhance the commonsense knowledge. I think that we should all study atomic, phonological and morphological elements and components of lexemes.
