Lady Macbeth, the Ambition behind the King
The eagerness to perform a deed with the sole intention of attaining a goal is often identified as ambition and is a fundamental component to the play Macbeth, one of William Shakespeare’s masterpieces. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth serves as the ambition behind her husband; she intends to propel him to a more powerful position. Lady Macbeth single-handedly fans the flame that was ignited in Macbeth by the three witches. Throughout the play, the vindictive and malevolent Lady Macbeth is the powerful woman behind her husband, convincing him to pursue the crown, although his humanity has weakened him.
Ambition is a double-edged sword. It can provide an individual with the desire to accomplish their goals and start working on them. In contrast, ambition can turn into valuating ambition, which refers to pursuing one’s goals without regarding the consequences that arise from it. Lady Macbeth persuades her husband to achieve their much-desired success by insulting his masculinity. She openly calls Macbeth a coward, “And live a coward in thine own esteem,” (1.7. 43). When belittling him, she holds nothing back as she knows that by so doing, she will be able to coax him into carrying out anything that needs to be done for the crown.
Lady Macbeth is more determined than Macbeth. She can only be crowned Queen once her husband is sworn as King, so, when he becomes hesitant, she shows enough ambition for them both.
