Written in 1934, "The Idea of Order at Key West" remains one of the most difficult poems by one of America's most difficult poets. Yet, it stands as one of Stevens' most anthologized poems, and according to most critics of his work, it is one of his best. Stevens must have liked it as well, as he made it the title poem in his 1936 collection, Ideas of Order. As widely praised as the poem is, no authoritative reading has emerged. Indeed, there are as many different interpretations of the poem as there are readers of it. Hence, define what you interpret as "Order" in Key West. Use the definition essay to format your focus.

Interpretation of Stevens’ Order: The Idea of Order at Key West
I interpret the “Order” in Wallace Stevens' poem as the ability of a person to make sense of reality by making shared mental representations that aim to reminisce experiences that are common to the people. To understand “Order” it is necessary to understand the role of the imagination of humans in responding to different environments. First, imagine yourself washing your hands with the water flowing from a faucet. Next, imagine yourself washing your body in the shower. Finally, imagine yourself feeling the water that surrounds you while bathing in a swimming pool. Each scenario had specific sensations that make them unique from one another. These sensations are common to those that experienced it. Our minds had an ordered mental representation that can characterize one place from another because of the unique sensations from the environment that stimulates our senses. The same is true with the poem “The Idea of Order at Key West” by Wallace Stevens. From the title itself, the “Idea of Order” is the key takeaway where Stevens is trying to express the unique mental representation of what a person can experience in a certain place that makes it unique from other places. There could be a different “Idea of Order” in other locations such as Spain or Paris, but in the context of this poem, that place is at the Key West.
