The Story of an Hour"
By Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin said that "The Story of an Hour" is a murder mystery, and that Brently Mallard, Richards, and Josephine are all suspect. Mrs. Mallard was told that her husband was killed in a train accident, hoping that she would have a heart attack and die after hearing the news. She did die, but from the shock of seeing her husband alive. The perfect murder had been committed because the cause of death was recorded as her joy of seeing him alive. Read between the lines and see if you can determine who attempted to murder her and got lucky when she died anyway.
The last line of the story is this: "When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease-of joy that kills." In what ways is this an ironic statement? What is gained by having the doctors make such a statement rather than putting it in the mouths of Josephine or Richards?

The Story of an Hour
Kate Chopin’s ‘‘Story of an Hour’’ tells the story of Louise Mallard, a woman who, after receiving the news about the death of her husband, feels sad, but later dies from the shock of seeing her husband alive. Literally, she died of a shock of disappointment not joy. No one attempted to murder her. In fact, it appears that she was the one who tried to murder her husband but failed. She could not withstand seeing her husband alive, and this is what killed her. Towards the end of the story, the doctors made an ironic statement that Mallard had died of heart disease of joy that kills (Chopin, 11). What makes it ironic is that on the one hand, the doctors believe that the shock of seeing that her husband was still alive killed her. On the other hand, the doctors think that the cause of Mallard's heart attack was the sheer joy and happiness of seeing him again. However, Mallardy seemed to be happy when she thought her husband was dead. Clearly, it was the shock of misery and disappointment of living with her husband that killed her, not joy. The real interpretation is that her husband's appearance took away her happiness. During the time that Mallard thought her husband dead, she started to realize the possibilities of individual freedom of living without her husband. In this interpretation, ‘‘the joy that kills makes her know that she lacks the freedom that she anticipated (Chopin, ...
