In his article "On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs: A Work Rant," David Graeber postulates the existence of "bullshit" or useless jobs that should not exist in the modern capitalist society. Graeber asserts that by now, people should be working fifteen hours a week, as John Keynes had predicted in the 1930s. Keynes presumed that technological advancements would have led to most of the work being performed by machines, and people would have more time for leisure, thinking, and learning. However, this is not the case. Many people globally still work forty to fifty hours a week. Many clerical, managerial, and sales sectors have emerged – jobs without genuine utility and whose purpose no one understands, including the people doing them. The reason why bullshit jobs proliferate, Graeber asserts, is because society perceives work as an end in itself rather than the value it creates. Graeber is right when he claims that human beings yearn for meaning and, therefore, the jobs they do should create value for themselves and society. Engaging in meaningless work is psychologically destructive, regardless of the compensation it offers.
