Abortion
One of the most contentious issues in the headlines today is abortion. In the US in particular, the question of whether abortion should be allowed or not has continued to raise different opinions. With the recent laws in Alabama and Indiana making abortions illegal, it has become clear that the issue is going to be part of public debates many years into the future. The debate addresses the wrongs and rights of terminating a pregnancy before the child is born. The process kills the fetus. The abortion debate seeks to find an agreement on two important issues: whether it is morally wrong and whether it should be legal. This paper takes the position that women should be allowed to make the choice of whether to terminate or pregnancy or not. Therefore, in this paper, I will argue how pro-choice is the stronger side compared to pro-life.
One of the major issues surrounding the topic is when life begins. For those against abortion, they advocate that life begins the moment the baby is conceived (Naden 30). For the pro-life advocates, terminating a pregnancy is murder and should not be allowed. On the other hand, those in support of abortion believe that life begins at birth or somewhere during pregnancy. For them, terminating a pregnancy should not be considered murder and therefore it should be allowed at any stage. According to this line of argument, if one believes that a fetus is already a person at the time of conception, then terminating pregnancy at any stage should be considered murder and therefore illegal and immoral. On the other hand, if one believes life begins when the baby is born, then the termination of pregnancy before birth is not murder and therefore it should be considered immoral or illegal. I believe abortion is not murder since the fertilized egg is not yet a baby. According to Nade, about 20% of babies are naturally aborted and as well as numerous fertilized eggs (32). Therefore, if a woman or a couple wishes to have a pregnancy terminated, they allowed to do so.
Decriminalizing abortions limits the reproductive freedom of women. Women should have full control over their bodies. If they feel they do not want to carry on with a pregnancy, then they should be permitted to terminate. However, when abortion is banned, the freedom of women over the control of their bodies is hindered (Srivastava 590). I believe it is extremely important that women have full control over the procreative activities of their bodies including childbearing, contraception, and abortion. This is more so important given that the woman or the couple will cover the medical costs as well as the costs of bringing up the child (Camosy 113). For womento plan and exercise personal responsibility it is essential that they have control over procreative activities of their bodies. If the woman feels that she is not in a position to take of the pregnancy o...
