The Interesting and Effective I Found In the Pleasures of Eating
In The Pleasures of Eating, Wendell Berry highlights the need for food consumers to know about food sources production as they are more likely to be concerned with sustainable agriculture and eat responsibly. “People who know the garden in which their vegetables have grown and know that the garden is healthy and remember the beauty of the growing plant,” (Berry). In other words, consumers who understand food production also appreciate the fresh and organic foods, which are mostly sourced locally. If people are to eat healthy foods then they did to appreciate food production and not just consumption. .
To Berry, Americans are mere consumers who do not care to understand how food production takes place and it is no surprise that eating has been trivialized even as is an important aspect of the agricultural system. “The industrial eater is, in fact, one who does not know that eating is an agricultural act, who no longer knows or imagines the connections between eating and the land,” (Berry). The writer likens consumers to industrial eaters who are ignorant about the realities of the food system, that they tend to be passive and cannot even ask critical questions. Berry’s opinion is based on observation and he effectively highlights that people still lack knowledge about agriculture as they are mere consumers.
