Understanding the similarities between literary works is essential for any reader. It allows him to appreciate the piece better in relation to the writer's internal mentality and external circumstances. Accordingly, this essay will focus on the similarities between Jean-Paul Sartre's No Exit and Ursula Le Guin's The One Who Walk Away from Omelas. Specifically, I would like to focus on how the two pieces show the dilemma between empathy and selfishness in relation to human nature. It is my belief that both pieces show the inherent human flaw wherein we tend to choose ourselves despite the suffering of others.
The Inherent Human Flaw
One of the reasons why humanity's inherent flaw is shown in both of these works is because of the fact that the happiness of several individuals in these stories was founded on the misery of others. On the one hand, it is clear that personal satisfaction and happiness were the main reasons why the characters suffered in Sartre's No Exit. First, it was shown that the main characters Garcin, Inez, and Estelle all ended up in hell because of their transgressions in life. They prioritized their personal happiness despite hurting others, such as when Garcin abused his wife when he said, "I'm here because I treated my wife abominably.
