The Irony of The Iliad
The Iliad is a fictitious story revolving around Ancient Greece. It has shown several developments in characters and their personalities as well. These changes seem to occur because of different circumstances that would come their way. Up until this moment, the very nature of the story is up for debate – is it pro-war? Anti-war? Or neither? In this paper, the author determines the nature of the story and justifying such judgment based on the first few parts of it.
Homer has illustrated all faces of war in his writing The Iliad. It has presented both the successes and the failures involved in a war. Even though winning the way may seem glorious as how the story has depicted it, Homer is indeed not a pro-war. Some would claim that Homer glorifies the effects of war. Winning the war may have been a very big achievement for the winning team. This has been reflected in the story. However, digging deeper into the contents of each line of the poem, the audience may realize that Homer is not really directing his words to promote war. Instead, he may have presented it to see the detrimental effects of conflicts between two groups which involve deadly weapons. The way on how Homer expresses his dissent against war is by highlighting specific graphical ways on how people get killed in the story. Winning the war in the story may have showcased bravery and unity among the warriors. This glorious victory may be analogous to winning a competition – but in a more joyful and a more satisfying way (pp. 94). However, the unnecessary slaughtering of other human beings just to win the intense war is something that is uncalled for – which is discreetly pointed out by Homer (pp. 96).
