How Emerson's Theories Influenced Thoreau's Actions
Life in the wood or Walden is a book written by Thoreau which was instrumental in the movement orchestrated by writers and philosophers. Several philosophies were borrowed from Emerson’s reading in Thoreau's book, including Nature, Self-reliance, and The American Scholar.
Emerson indicates how nature is essential to the human mind in the American scholar. The book further laments, “Every day, the sun; and, after sunset, Night and her stars” (2). Also, in the book, Self-reliance, Emmerson talks about the “Vast space of nature, the Atlantic Ocean…” which gives hope to people and removes fear (12). In the book Nature, Emmerson argues that if a man finds themselves lonely, the “let him look at the stars” as they are a sign of beauty (Chapter 1). Emmerson was in love with nature. Thoreau was also inspired and wrote the book Walden while alone in the woods, far from anyone, for 26 months on the shore of Walden ponds (6).
