Essay Instructions:
  1. Choose one from this list: Boston Review, The Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, Seed (seedmagazine.com), Orion (orionmagazine.org), The Sun (thesunmagazine.org), Vox (vox.com), The Chronicle of Higher EducationGuernica Magazine (guernicamag.com), JSTOR Daily (daily.jstor.org), Hippocampus Magazine (hippocampusmagazine.com) ProPublica (propublica.org), Aeon (aeon.co), Harlot(harlotofthearts.org), Present Tense (presenttensejournal.org), National Public Radio (npr.org), The Intercept (theintercept.com), The Baffler (thebaffler.com), Wired (wired.com). I’ll consider others. Convince me. There’s an extensive list of such publications here: https://longform(dot)org/archive/publications. Longform.org collects long public essays published in other places. Those you can’t access freely may be available through the Sawyer Library.
  2. Briefly profile this publication, focusing on details that will help you identify the audience this publication has cultivated, and to help you make decisions as a writer for them. This could include its owners, funding sources, editors, publishers, history, etc., but more importantly, look at the rhetoric it uses to frame its content. What is the ethos of the magazine? Who is the intended audience? What ethos does it encourage readers to adopt? What are its politics? How can you tell? How does visual design work as rhetoric? If there are advertisements, how might they be relevant to your understanding of this publication and its relationship to its audience? Is this a print only publication? Is it totally free online? Is some or all content paywalled for subscribers?
  3. Explain why this publication would be a good fit for your A3 essay, and how the key details from your profile will matter to the rhetorical decisions you’ll make as a writer in A3.

     4.    Write a paragraph or two defining your Situated Ethos. Describe any relevant true things about yourself you’re carrying into this project. What is your prior experience with this subject? How might certain elements of your identity need to be addressed openly? How might they influence the ways an audience understands and judges what you produce? What relevant biases do you carry (yes, you do because we all do), and how will you deal with them responsibly in this project?

Write a paragraph or two to make in initial plan for your Invented Ethos in your A3 essay. Describe the tone, diction, persona, amount of past-tense personal narrative and/or present-tense personal reflection, etc. you think it most appropriate to adopt for his particular rhetorical situation. Explain why.
