Girls’ analysis
Throughout this documentary, it is clearly illustrated how girls experience heavy works during their transition from childhood to adult stage. During this stage, girls indeed perform heavy duties compared to male counterparts. To some extent, a mother takes time to inquire from their daughter if the girl was willing to perform these domestic activities. Since she wants to remain valuable in society, she agrees to take up such familial responsibilities. In fact, her life is not only based on the performance of domestic works but also on implementing policies that nurture for a successful future. Kincaid (par. 1), attribute this responsibilities to the concept of biases, illustrating that the female children are obsessed with various activities, and these included yearning for respectfulness, adhering to religious principles, proper choice of friends, and beautifying the family courtyard.
Yearning for Respectfulness
Being a girl requires possession of some unique characters that distinguish one from other ladies. According to Kincaid (par. 1), these behaviors qualify a girl to be recognized as a respectful woman. The author unveils various activities that qualifies someone to be treated a dutiful woman. For instance, a lady needs to wash clothes daily, avoid walking bareheaded, especially during scorching sunshine, and cook foods. Her clothes need not contain some stains that make her look ugly in the public face. “Soak your little clothes right after you take them off” (par. 1). For clothes that have gums and could be quite harder to wash, she is required to soak them until they soften and more comfortable to clean. “When buying cotton to make yourself a nice blouse, be sure that it doesn't have gum on it, because that way it won't hold up well after a wash” (par. 2). Upon washing those clothes, she has to iron them to eliminate creases, especially for their parents' dresses. Surely, they deliberately do these activities so that they can experience a blessed future. In this case, the proper performance of domestic activities makes a lady to be loved in a particular community.
Religious Adherence
In most cases, the lady is urged to participate in singing benna, especially in Sunday school. It is because Sunday is perceived as a place that extremely nurtures the future lifestyle of a girl. A respectful woman is one who walks decently on Sundays. The author says, “On Sundays try to walk like a lady and not the slut you are bent on becoming.” In a separate view, the elders believe that respect is synonymous with religious adherence. If a lady sticks to church activities, they tend to remain faithful and respectful. She should also avoid bad company. “You mustn’t speak to wharf-rat boys, not even to give direction.” It is because most religious sects teach their followers to friendliness and condemn immoral acts.
