Different regions offer different examinations for university entrance, China offers the Gaokao, Korea offer the Suneung and the Americans offer the SAT. In the West, the SATs are observed stressful and important but they do not warranty for drastic reactions such as suicide as they not stressed to be the end of it all. A mid score with some prowess in sports or prove of community involvement can lead one into college than compared to Suneung and Gaokao. In American school, social life revolves not only around education but extracurricular activities but nothing similar to the Koreans and Chinese counterparts.
In fact, in China, tests have been the sole portal to the next advancement and the tradition has been in existence since 1978. The system was handled by the ministry of education before being handled to the subsequent provinces where a student selects their university after or before the test (Kim and Jung 93). This often brings out either a student doing better for the chosen school or getting a lower score and thus barring the individual from attending the selected school.
