Coercion and Morality
A major practice of many governments around the world is taxation. An individual is taxed and the money is spent on improving the welfare of others. As a fully employed middle-income class working American citizen and taxpayer, Cameron’s annual income falls between $42,000 and $126,000. Through taxation, Cameron is forced to surrender part of his hard-earned money for the benefit of other Americans. It is immoral and unjust for a person to be forcibly used to serve the purpose of others and a refusal to comply by the person should not result in the use of force against him.
The US federal government constituents; the executive, judiciary and the legislature, popularly known as the Congress rely on taxpayers to accumulate resources necessary for its operations and the purported services to its country. Congress makes the laws that are then enforced by the executive. These laws are inclusive of the taxation laws which are based on various factors such as the income class. This means that a person with a high income gets to pay more than those with lower income. The accumulated resources can be used to serve various purposes such as wages for government employees, social security services, infrastructure among others that serve to benefit all. Since the government gets to choose on the deduction and how to spend one's hard-earned cash, control over personal property is compromised and therefore it can be termed as theft which is immoral.
