Does Art have a Historical Essence?
Since archaic times the essence of art has been a subject of controversy. Over the last decade, the essence of art has become a salient topic amongst contemporary artists, art world participants. Art is a form of expression that utilizes different aspects of our experiences and stories. Traditionally art showcases different cycles, times and period. But the level of essence varies depending on the recipient’s culture, beliefs and traditions. Art symbolized different elements therefore there was no universal definition of the historical essence of art This stems from the lack of individuality, and autonomy of art has to follow an ordained path to becoming accepted into a culture, society. Although there is a little literature on the historical essence of art, in the pre-history extensive evidence exists is embedded in the symbolic rise of civilization, archaeology and contemporary new artwork theories.
Essence of Art
According to Heidegger's critics, the indoctrination of the aesthetic approach to art is the leading cause for lack of a universally agreed essence of art. However, Heidegger does not explicitly dismiss the aesthetics aspect of art; as a matter of fact, he describes the anti-aesthetics approach as blind entanglement implicated in the logic of aesthetics. In his purview, this oppositional movement traps and inhibits access to the great significance of art in the historical world. In most cases, art embodies reflecting, expressing, and memorializing figures, concepts that shape the minds and perspectives of people. Therefore, art is subjective and independent of the experiences and stories of an artist. In light of this approach, art reflects different perspectives based on time and context. For example, prehistoric art gives a brief outline of life's economic, social, and physical aspects. Art is a product of human being's desire and conviction to gain a profound meaning in life. In some ways, it can be described as a mode to grasp a deeper meaning of life. Heidegger asserts that art supports populists' beliefs engrained in revolutionary inspirations. In his purview, art brings about political balance as it provides context and timing of the historical events thus allowing truth to spring forth. Borrowing from Heraclitus's perspectives on the historical significance of art, Heidegger builds on the tension conceptualized on the good, worthy, noble that center our structure of ourselves and the world. For instance, in his philosophical narratives, Heidegger narrates the unique role that the ancient Greek temple at Paestum served in unifying the historical precepts by collectively reinforcing present and most important sense (Thomson).
The notion of art as a unifying factor has gained prominence over the last century.
