Death of Salesman
A tragedy is a sad play that ends up with the main character dying or losing everything. The ending of such films is generally sad. Death of a Salesman is a tragic film that was written by Arthur Miller. It is about a successful African-American salesman, Willy Loman, in America. He has invested a lot in the American dream, and to him, failure is not an option. The irony in his life is seen when he still depends on handout help from his neighbors, who are all White. He has lost his identity but still does not want to accept this fact. The film ends with Loman committing suicide and, subsequently, his funeral. This film fits to be categorized as a tragedy film because it has a sad ending where Loman, the main character, commits suicide.
All the characters in this film live in denial. They know where the problem is, but they fear to address it. Linda, Loman's wife, for example, knows how her husband is, but she does not want to accept the situation. She follows her husband, blindly, in the wrong direction. The characters portray their roles well and work together to achieve the tragedy in the film. They see Loman as a successful salesman with a good life even when they know that he is breaking within (Thompson 256).
The main theme of the film is the lack of communication and the effects it has. All the characters do not want to address their problems beginning with Loman. He sees himself as wealthy but still survives on handouts from his white neighbors. His wife, Linda, knows what her husband is but still chooses to assume that everything is okay. Other themes present in the film are ignorance and betrayal.
Muller selects technical aspects of lighting and camera angles that portray help enhance the themes in the film. Close up shots are used to show the facial expressions of the characters clearly. The lighting is dim at the end to show a somber mood surrounding this family. Death of a salesman is a great film to watch, which has many lessons to be learned in contemporary society (Thompson 267).
