In “To the Ladies,” Lady Mary Chudleigh expresses feminism by demonstrating how women are mistreated in marriages. In particular, the poem expresses the social constraints and expectations placed upon women at the time when it was formed. An application of a feminist lens offers insights into the underlying themes and perspectives that shape the lives of women in society. In this analysis, we understand how the author challenges traditional gender roles and urges women to shun the yoke that keeps them oppressed through marriage.
Chudleigh advocates for equality between men and women in marriage. Feminist theory believes in economic, political and social equality of both men and women. The author challenges the idea that women are inferior to their husbands. She uses a controlling metaphor by describing a wife’s role with ideas associated with slavery: “Wife and servant are the same, but only differ in the name” (1). Chudleigh sees the submissive actions of wives as tying them to slavery. In such a servitude relationship, women are left at the mercy of their husbands, who must determine what they (women) can or cannot do. The author calls for equality between men and women by eliminating the slavery status that society ascribes to women. This is the only way of restoring the dignity of women in society and allowing them to enjoy equal status.
