Gender Imbalance in College Institutions
Gender imbalance in the institutions of higher learning is becoming a fundamental concern that is affecting the welfare of students. Studies have revealed that there is a significant increase in the number of female applicants to universities compared to the male. Britz has depicted the current situation in our societies today. Although gender equality has been achieved today, women are still facing discrimination as a result of hegemonic masculinity. I agree with Britz that the ratio of college applicants between the female and male population is about 3:1. Consequently, the male generation has higher chances of being accepted in the university institutions compared to the female representatives. The young men in the United States of America have consequently discovered that even if they perform on average, they have more options and higher chances of being admitted to the higher learning institutions of their choice. The increase in the number of female individuals at the undergraduate level does not prevent the existence of unequal power relations between the female and male. Women in the higher learning institutions are still adversely impacted by patriarchy and hegemonic masculinity that presents itself in different forms of discrimination.
The article “To All the Girls I’ve Rejected” by Jennifer Britz illustrates how men have a better chance in colleges that women. In this article Britz does use a persuasive tone. Britz uses ethos when she describes her personal experiences as a person who denies or accepts college applicants. The content of the article is very short and leaves a big room for the audience to think and yearn for more. Additionally Britz illustrates pathos when she asserts that “I’m sending out waitlist and rejection letters to nearly 3,000 students”. I agree with the author that today, our societies accept nothing but a bachelor’s degree. It is very difficult to please people. Although the author gives her apology to the students and parents for rejection, this will not be able to fulfill their expectations. Just saying sorry does not make any amendments or wipe the tears of those who had prepared to join colleges but their applications were rejected. In this case I find this not completely persuasive.
I agree with the author’s assertion that the preference of male students over female students in the United States colleges has resulted in the dominance of heterosexual masculine culture in these institutions. Female students are affected socially through being exposed to different forms of prejudicial and discriminatory acts which impedes the successful realization of the students. I agree with Britz that there are women than men in the Universities. In the campus of CU, women comprises of 55% of the total population while men take 45%. Britz also uses the example of the article of “Gender Gap” to illustrate how the population of women is large compared to that of men. However the author states that from 2009 to 2011 the data remained the same. This triggers questions lie “How can data remain the same for three years? (Britz 772)
