Most of the time, ignorance is bliss, and it takes one to see new knowledge before one can make a change to the present. The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara is a brilliant short story about awareness and empowerment. Miss Moore goes to the poor neighborhoods and uses every opportunity for the children to see the glaring inequality. Her purpose is to empower the young kids with information so that they are not content with their lives. Miss Moore comes off as boring with her trips and lifestyle, but they are ultimately designed to provide awareness and empowerment to the kids to have the impetus to change their lives.
When Miss Moore comes to the neighborhood, her projects and trips seem boring, but they have a purpose. The protagonist, Sylvia, describes her as boring in how she plans the trips. However, Miss Moore has some methods and goals for her crazy ideas. She tells the kids that they live in a slum which does not go down well with the kids, especially Sylvia. It is even said that the parents talk behind her back, and she is described as "with nappy hair and proper speech and no makeup" (Bambara 1). The idea, therefore, by Miss Moore is to show the kids what the situation they are in. she tells them that they live in a slum so that they can try to improve their lives beyond the poor neighborhood. While the kids do not understand, she is working to enlighten them about their condition so that they understand the reality and fight for what they deserve.
