Discrimination against Latino people in America
Introduction
On August 3rd 2019, Patrick Crusius opened fire in a Walmart store in El Paso targeting to kill ‘Mexicans’ in the attack. He killed 22 people and injured 24 others. The shooting lifted the lid on the anti-Latino discrimination in the United States. Latinos is a term mostly used in North America to describe people who are predominantly from Latin America. It is a term commonly used synonymously with Mexicans and Hispanics though they are vastly different. One of the predominant factors that makes these groups to be indistinguishable from one another is because they mostly speak Spanish and come from historically Spanish colonized lands in North and South America. According to the CITATION Uni181 \l 1033 (United States Census Bureau), there are about 58.9 million Hispanics in the United States as of July 2017 and they make up the nation’s largest ethnic racial minority. Over the years, Latino population in America have continued to face discrimination.
How are Latino’s discriminated
According to CITATION Mar181 \l 1033 (Lopez, Gonzalez-Barrera and Krogstad), ‘four-in-ten Latinos say they have experienced discrimination in the past year, such as being criticized for speaking Spanish or being told to go back to their home country.’ Most of Latino people claim that they mostly experience the being called offensive racial slurs, being told to go back to their country, get criticized for speaking Spanish in public or unfairly treated in public spaces for being Hispanic. They also claim that they are mainly discriminated by the whites who consider them foreigners to America despite most of them being citizens. The discrimination of Latinos is evidenced by the slow upward mobility of the community in America. Communities that are predominantly Hispanic tend to have less resources and educational investments put to them (Lopez). Without education, upward mobility for Latinos would continue to persist. Additionally, according to a 2017 U.S. Census Bureau report, 68.7 percent of Hispanics in comparison to 92.9 percent non-Hispanic whites had a high school diploma. 16.0 percent of Hispanics in comparison to 35.8 percent of non-Hispanic whites had a bachelor's degree or higher CITATION USD19 \l 1033 (U.S Deprtment of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health). Surprisingly, more learned Latinos are more likely to be considered white and hence less likely to be segregated or discriminated. Therefore, one way to fight discrimination against Latinos is to invest in their education. Furthermore, Latinos have the highest uninsured rates of any racial or ethnic group in the United States and also have relatively lower life expectancy than non-Hispanic whites. Latinos also have higher rate of obesity than any other racial/ethnic group in America. These issues signify that Latinos are largely discriminated against in the United States.
