Chapter 4: Social Structure, Process, Culture, and Delinquency
Social and environmental factors have a significant influence on delinquent acts. Most delinquents do not calculate evil and are indigent. They most likely grew up in deteriorated environments and had zero social assistance and economic hardships. Their social life has been in a mess, starting from their families, schools, and peers. Their perceptions towards socialization in families, schools, and the community are therefore damaged. The essay aims to understand the destructive influence of social factors and conditions on the behavior of humans.
Sociologists claim that most delinquents are usually desperate and rarely calculate or think of evil. They are involved in crime simply because they grew up in a deteriorated environment, lacking social support and adequate economic resources (Siegel and Welsh 116). Additionally, their relationships with society, including their schools, families, and peers, may significantly influence their behavior. The racial disparity also influences crime, where poverty rates are higher in the 'minority groups' than the whites (116).
In the United States (US), the stratified society system is widely used. Social stratification occurs due to the unequal distribution of wealth, prestige, and power (116-118). People who are struck by poverty live in deteriorated conditions, and their children's behavior is likely to be influenced and shaped by the condition. For example, experts have identified income inequality and racism in delinquency as critical causes of crime and drug abuse among the youth (118).
The social disorganization theory places a critical focus on the urban environment conditions that impact delinquency rates. Delinquency rates are linked to socioeconomic conditions. A community is undermined by extreme poverty in these areas, which causes a sense of mistrust and hopelessness (120). As a result, the community becomes socially disorganized, and the people living in it are lured into antisocial conduct (120-121).
Community deterioration is evidenced by poverty, disassociation, alienation, and fear of delinquency. According to social ecologists, there is a major link between community deterioration and delinquency rates (122-125). There are high rates of delinquency in deteriorated communities, which makes the residents become crime victims. According to the school of social ecology, a community's quality of life, fear and change levels, deterioration, and poverty directly impact its delinquency rates (123-125).
Anomie is a society in which behavior rules and principles break down during rapid social changes or periods of social crisis. A so...
