Stories narrated orally by recounting what one has heard or recording observations are prone to manipulation. People lie for various reasons, and a famous politician once told people at a political rally that he would build a bridge where there was no river. Equally, I heard Obama saying that he would implement the Affordable Care Act within the first two years in the office, and this he accomplished as promised. Determining which story is credible is a rigorous process. It starts by knowing the person, counter-examining his actions, commitment, and charter to know whether they are telling the truth. A lead inquisitor should be able to ask questions that help determine the accuracy of the information, the character of the informant, whether the person is lying or forging documents, under pressure or duress, and the content of the questions should eliminate bias and personal opinion.
Similarly, hadiths, which are reports of the words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad, were reported by his followers called the companions, and critics have argued that they were subjected to manipulations. Accordingly, leading Muslim scholars had to decipher which accounts were true and credibly recounted the life and actions of the Prophet.
