For this assignment, you will read the article (attached) titled Body Ritual Among the Nacirema (opens in a new window)by Horace Miner. After carefully reading and evaluating the article, you will write a 2 page analysis (350 - 500 words/MLA format).

Step 1: Carefully read Horace Miner's essay on the Nacirema.
You may have to read the article more than once to "get it." Chapter 3 in our text also discusses the “Nacirema” article. Refer to our text to get a further understanding of the article.
Step 2: Carefully consider your life-long, "in-the-field" interactions with the Nacirema. Yes, you have indeed interacted with Nacirema your entire life or a portion of your life.

Step 3: Write a two page analysis 350-500 words. For your essay, you will choose one single Nacirema body ritual that is NOT mentioned in Mr. Miner’s article. You may adopt the author's satirical style and use it in writing your paper.

Body Ritual Among the Nacirema
The Nacirema are a North American group whose culture is not well understood by the outsiders, and even as their culture seems extreme, they have managed to thrive. Practicing various body rituals distinguishes them is a common feature, but they also live in a well-developed market just like Americans. Even as I do not know the Nacirema, some aspects of their culture are familiar, in the modern context. For instance, they have medicine men and women, just like physicians, pharmacists, and psychiatrists. The people maintain shrines and a charm-box. The charm-box is like a medicine cabinet. They also have mouth-rite rituals where there are magic wands inserted in them or forced to eat certain substances (Miner 504). Brushing teeth is a recommended practice in the U.S. to improve oral health. Notgnihsaw is an important hero to the people, and every society has its heroes. The practice of tattooing as a form of body modification that is sacred and is explored.
The body ritual is tattooing those ten years and above using nroht, thorns from the sacred koa tree and ink from charcoal and water. The ritual begins with puncturing the skin using the nroht dipped in ink, and following a pattern to insert the ink permanently.
