During his career, Carducci was a nonconformist, and a republican who openly supported Giuseppe Mazzini and Giuseppe Garibaldi during the unification wars. Consequently, in his poetry works, he displayed anti-clerical and anti-Romantic nature. This is evident in Versailles that has plenty of neoclassical verses, vocabulary, and references used as awakening instruments against political and religious elements that existed in France. In this poem, Carducci refers to the king and church as “two carcasses” (Jones p 59), which implies that the two will at some point crash down and leave power to the people. This style of poetry is common in literature as it symbolizes certain activities or events.
