Stella Ting-Toomey and Leeva Chung’s book, Understanding Intercultural Communication, and Jung Chang’s Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China, share common ground on effectively communicating with individuals with different cultural perspectives. Notably, Ting-Toomey and Chung examined the characteristics and processes, and these are reflected in Chang’s work, which depicted the reality of communication in twentieth-century China.
The first connection talks about gender identity. Ting-Toomey and Chung defined it as the individual’s interpretation of one’s reflection and the society’s classification of this as male or female (69). Chang frequently illustrates this representation, which is most evident when the foot-binding of the females was explained. The author described her grandmother’s explanation of its significance in history. During those times, Chinese women are judged by the beauty of their feet. Right after marriage, the husband’s household examines the newly wedded wife’s feet, and if these are found to be large (but basically average), these are regarded as shameful. Due to this, the women are forced to wear the foot bindings until adulthood (Chang 24). This essentially demonstrates gender identity because it distinguishes the actions of the society towards women, and it sets their status in society.
Acculturation is the second commonality between the texts. Ting-Tommey and Chung suggested that this is the extent of an individual’s changes when placed from a familiar to an unfamiliar setting (70). In Wild Swans, this was visualized as Yu-Fang became General Xue’s concubine, and she was forced to follow their culture, such as throwing extensive parties, because that was what was expected with concubines (Chang 34). Here, acculturation was evident as she left her everyday life and activities and forced herself to fit in her new environment.
Next, the positional family system was described by Ting-Toomey and Chung as the assigned roles of each member in the family, and it follows the hierarchy system, such that the higher roles should be followed by the lower ranks (68). Chang writes that Yu-Fang was forced into concubinage by her father. Because the parents are higher-ranked than their children, Yu-Fang’s only choice was to follow because any opposition is considered sacrilegious, and this is as grave as being accused of treason (30).
