People have varied perspectives regarding different concepts and ideas. The same goes for the various advertisements found through an online and offline setting, as people have different approaches and takes to each of them. Despite this diversity, factors such as advertisements greatly influence an individual’s perception about the subject of the advertisement or event the whole scenario itself. This paper will deeply analyze the surface and underlying goals of advertisements to their audience.
The Nike | Equality Commercial
The advertisement focused on this paper would be Nike’s commercial prepared and produced. The content it was trying to sell was the brand itself, as it depicts its stand to promote equality. Thus, it is safe to assume that this commercial is advocacy advertising. To explain more, the commercial has black and white cinematography, which only consists of various shots of people doing sports, music, dancing, and painting lines in different areas, together with a voice-over. Looking closely, it centers on how most people of color have fewer opportunities despite being promised more (Nike). While facts within this commercial are discrimination, sports should be based on skills, regardless of race, color, or beliefs.
Settings and Objects
The settings behind this commercial were generally the neighborhood where the people who live are people of color, and at the same time were various courts, roads, gyms, grocery shops, and buildings. It can also be observed how each shot differentiated from day and night, thus presenting that the commercial advocacy is present regardless of time and place. In regards to objects, the most noticeable object within the commercial was the white spray paint that most of the actors used in it, and also some objects regarding sports could be seen such as basketball, soccer, and tennis balls, as well as tennis rackets. Batons and pianos can also be seen at some point, and the same goes for the cars as they can be observed most of the time.
Actors
The actors were varied to young children, adolescents, and adults. The race was also varied as mixed colors can be found within the commercial despite being black and white, but the majority are people of color. All actors were either representing a specific sport or were focused on the camera as they glided through the city, spraying white paint. Some celebrities were even cast to be part of the commercial, such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, and many more, interconnected to sports. Besides this connection, most celebrities cast were also people of color, representing how their color was the center for this advocacy.
