Essay Instructions:

From Michael Sandel's book, "Justice." In each chapter, he presents a series of issues as a way of presenting the major theories that have been proposed when considering how to "do the right thing" under different circumstances. For example, Chapter 2 presents Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill as major proponents of Utilitarianism. Chapter 3 presents Robert Nozick, a representative of Libertarianism. Chapter 5 presents Emanuel Kant and Deontology. And Chapter 6 presents John Rawls as the most recent proponent of "Liberal" social contract theory. In this way, we have been perpetually refining our definition of Justice by looking at it from a variety of perspectives and changing conditions. Now, it is time to apply these theories to the following hypothetical scenario:
You are the Chief of Police in your local town. You receive an emergency alert that the Hudson Nuclear Power Plant has exploded. You quickly go to the closest nuclear bomb shelter. In the growing chaos, you discover there is limited space inside, and you have only minutes before the nuclear radiation will arrive, wiping out all life in the tri-state area. You are asked to justify why YOU (and not the other leaders who will be arriving) should be admitted inside and allowed to survive. As a condition of entry, the guard wants to know how you will lead their future society after the nuclear disaster is over. Specifically, he asks you what perspective/principle would you recommend to ensure the renewal of a Just Society in that soon to be unknown future.
Adopt one of the theoretical perspectives we have previously discussed in class, define/describe the theory, and provide three reasons why you would adopt that school of thought as a first principle for your future society. Give at least one reference/example from the book to support each of your reasons. Then, provide at least one reason why you would NOT adopt each of the other main theories discussed in Chapters 1 through 6 of this book.

Theoretical Issues in Justice Studies
As the chief of police in my local town, one understands that people’s lives matter and that the public should be protected at all costs. However, in some cases, it becomes hard to safeguard the well-being of all individuals in a particular area, particularly during a nuclear explosion. In the scenario at hand, the Hudson Nuclear Power Plant has exploded, and everyone is rushing to the bomb shelter to secure their lives. Indeed, to persuade the guards to enter due to the limited space of the evacuation center, an individual will show them how the adoption of utilitarianism would lead to a safer society where all people are happy. Utilitarianism refers to the theoretical perspective that leads to the implementation of policies to enhance the safety of the majority of people.
The first reason why I would adopt utilitarianism is that it benefits the majority of individuals in society. John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham affirm that the above principle maximizes happiness for many people by eradicating pain and optimizing pleasure (Sandel 23). As such, the ability to do things in the right way improves the lives of many individuals. If the future society implements utilitarianism, it means that proper precautions will be taken such that even if a nuclear explosion occurs, the majority of people will not be hurt. For this reason, as a leader, I will emphasize disaster mitigation and preparedness by extending the bomb shelter so that it can accommodate all people within my vicinity during emergencies.
Second, utilitarianism encourages the participation of the public during decision-making processes. Many are the times when leaders do not listen to their followers or value their opinions, particularly to understand the root of various ...
