There is always a weak balance between a person’s liberty to freedom of speech and another person’s liberty to safeguard their good name. In this case, Ursula, George and Davina can sue each other on the grounds of defamation (Rolph 10). It is usually hard to know which individual remarks are appropriate and if one decides to place a lawsuit against the other, they need to prove the following.
First they have to prove that someone had made a statement, the statement was published, and it caused injury Cross & Roger 13). One has also to prove that the statement was untrue and did not fall into an advantageous category (Miller 73). In this case, Ursula can present a letter from George to her falsely stating that she was dishonest as she used up funds intended for a student to take a trip to Turkey. This statement caused Ursula her potential job as Tort law professor hence falling under a disadvantaged category.
George on the other hand, can sue Ursula for defamation because he accused him of sleeping with Davina, his student. This was not true; besides the statement was published to the group hence causing a potential bad reputation of George to the group members. Also, Davina can sue Ursula for the same. He publicly stated that he had slept with Davina and had a potential relationship with a professor. Ursula stated these false lies to the public when she posted the comment for the entire group to see. This made those who saw the post to consider Davina to be without morals as she slept with professors.
So this means that the parties can choose to sue each other or just settle their issues outside court has all of them will possibly bear liability for defamation.
