Let's focus on what the records of the Lewis and Clark expedition tell us about the Native American societies they encountered and points of intersection with the lesson commentary material. One observation provoked by what I saw in the assigned video segments was the first meeting between the Shoshone Indians and the white man. Lewis and Clark's expedition party required horses if they were to cross the endless mountains before winter and make it to the Pacific. The Shoshone had horses, but they did not speak any white man's language since no white man had ever interacted with them. Besides, there was the challenge of establishing rapport and building trust with the indigenous tribe to convince them to part with their horses.
