The world we live in is full of problems and competitions, and the survival of a person is possible only when he is ready to compete with the rivals in the respective industry or field. The main problem is that those who lack money cannot achieve success in any walk of life, and those who have a lot of money keep it locked in their banks and do not bother to spend it on the betterment of others. In The Gospel of Wealth, an article written by Andrew Carnegie, the main argument is that the rich should live their lives with modesty and use their money to elevate the civilization (Smith 43).
The money an industrialist earns every day is far more than a poor can make in the whole month. Thus, it becomes the responsibility of the upper class and self-made rich to help the government deal with the issue of wealth inequality. For this purpose, according to Andrew Carnegie, they can initiate human-friendly projects and utilize the surplus means in a responsible, thoughtful and reasonable way. The approach of Andrew was contrasted with traditional bequest where the money is handed over to heirs (Smith 56).
The author can be seen arguing that using the surplus wealth wisely, it is possible to cultivate a large number of lands and to implement the policies that are meant to benefit human beings in the long run, without any discrimination. Unfortunately, a lot of money is wasted on useless projects, and Carnegie is against the unwise use of capital in the form of unreasonable spending, self-indulgence, and extravagance. Instead, the government or the administration should encourage the wealthy to spend their money on research projects and noble causes (Smith 61).
In the text, Andrew Carnegie writes "I consider it a disgrace to die a rich man," (Smith 63) which clearly means he does not want to die rich and instead dreams of handing over his money to someone who can spend it on the poor and needy. As an industrialist, philanthropist and business magnate, Andrew could ease his life in a lot of ways.
