The Requerimiento
How would your character describe the process and impact of the Requerimiento on the indigenous people?
As a Native American residing in the Caribbean, I hold onto the precious beliefs which my ancestors preserved during the Spanish invasion of our lands. I strongly oppose and condemn any oppression of people based on their ethnicity, skin color, and cultural beliefs. Notably, these character traits communicate a lot about the violent process and impact of the Requerimiento on the Native Americans. First, the process of enacting the Requerimiento by the conquistadors was wrong and unacceptable because they read it in Spanish. Since I do not understand Spanish, I cannot comply with the conquistadors’ orders. I agree that the Spaniards wanted to convert us into Christians, take our land, and utilize it to empower themselves economically.
However, I rebuke the conquistadors for trying to force themselves on the natives because they should have sought to translate the Requerimiento in our native language before reading its contents to us. We would have complied. However, I believe we were justified to resist because Spaniards used the Requerimiento as a scapegoat for enslav...
