Michel Tremblay's Les Belles Soeurs
Over the years, Michael Tremblay has been acknowledged as one of Quebec's new playwrights. Even though he has many plays, one outstanding one is Les Belles-Soeurs. One reason the play is outstanding is that it represents some of the societal issues. One of the areas that the play has shown is the double standards of his characters and a great affection towards the women living in 1960s Quebec.
There have been various scenarios where Tremblay has shown double standards. One of the scenarios where he has used Germaine and Linda to expose this standard. For instance, since Tremblay does not love Roberts, she opposes her daughter continuing to date him. For example, she is being rude to Linda that she is stupid for continuing to date her. Rather than giving Linda legit reasons why she should not date her, she only gives general reasons that do not seem logical. For example, she asks Linda when she will realize that Robert is a bozo. The only reason she highlights it is his earning, where she highlights “he doesn’t even make sixty bucks a week” (Tremblay). When Germaine opposes Roberts, Linda supports him, highlighting that he expects a pay raise when earning 80 grand a week. However, Germaine does not seem to change her mind despite hearing this. For example, after rejecting Linda's idea to go with Roberts, she opposes the idea of Robert coming to their home.
