European nations’ rush for the new found land in the Americas started in the late 1400’s with a Spanish expedition led by Christopher Columbus. However, it took the Spanish explorers one more century to occupy various parts of America, North and South. In the mid-1750’s the West intensified its competition over the newly found land and took possession of the North American region. The Spaniards, for instance, possessed the colonies of Florida, England took to itself the colonies of New England and Virginia alongside the Somers Isles, while the Dutch had the New Netherland. France controlled the Canadian and Acadian colonies, New Sweden fell under the Swedish, while Norway and Denmark shared the Greenland colonies between themselves.
