Introduction
Universal health care entails a context where all persons and communities access essential medical services without incurring financial costs. Some goals of universal health coverage include providing effective treatment, enhancing the quality of health services, disease control, and rehabilitation over an individual’s lifespan. Healthcare constitutes the most important socio-political discussion in the United States (U.S.). Accordingly, it is ranked one of the factors influencing electorates’ choices on the ballot. Historically, the U.S. used private and public sectors to provide universal health care. This essay discussed arguments for universal health coverage in America, including its capacity to augment opportunities for preventive health measures, reduce economic costs for accessing healthcare services, address the growing cases of chronic diseases, mitigate the vast health inequalities, and eliminate medical bills in healthcare provision.
Increasing the Opportunities for Preventive Healthcare Measures
Universal healthcare is necessary to augment opportunities for preventive healthcare initiatives and provide healthcare coverage to ensure equal access to healthcare and reduce the disparities among the people. It is an opportunity to reach the significant, uninsured, and increasingly unhealthy sections of society, thus reducing healthcare access disparities. Through universal health, America has the potential to adopt healthcare models such as a value-based approach for affordable care and integration of systems of care such as medication and public health (Zieff et al. 3). In addition, access to affordable universal healthcare by Americans will limit the health risk emanating from chronic diseases as well as improve general public health thus giving the state government opportunity to invest in other public sectors and reach other long-term economic goals.
Reducing the Economic Costs to Healthcare Access
The universal healthcare coverage initiatives are expected to adopt measures which help mitigate the skyrocketing costs pertaining to healthcare access to every citizen. For example, in the preventive initiatives’ health model, the government can invest $10 per person for a period of one year in a community based-program geared toward preventing unhealthy practices such as poor nutrition, physical inactivity, as well as smoking. In this regard, the country can save more than $16 billion annually within a period of five years which is equivalent to a 5.6 percent return on every dollar spent on a universal healthcare program (Zieff et al. 3). In addition, implementing universal healthcare is a practical strategy to reduce the fees for clinical and hospital services charged on Americans, increase employment opportunities for workers, and boost the productivity in the labor market. Therefore, universal healthcare is central to reducing economic costs and mitigating rising healthcare spending while simultaneously enhancing health outcomes.
