2nd FILM REACTION PAPER Due by 8 PM on Monday, 11/25  INSTRUCTIONS  Based on the film 1987 (screened in class on November 18 and 20), write about one of the following aspects of Korean society in the 1980s: • The June Democratic Uprising of 1987 • Government suppression of political/human rights • Anti-communism in South Korea   • Pro-democracy demonstrations/democratic activists  • State-society relations  • Korean civil society • What were some of the side effects of South Korea’s rapid economic development under military regimes? (South Korea’s model of economic development in the 1970s and 1980s has been viewed as a model of inspiration for many developing countries trying to catch up economically. But as you will see in the movie 1987, South Korea’s development was achieved as military regime prioritized economic policies and national security that suppressed democracy and political freedom.) • You may also write a paper that addresses other issues that you find interesting in the film.   Whatever subject you choose, your response paper should have a specific focus that is clearly stated in a topic sentence at or near the beginning of your paper.   I encourage you to pursue some further independent research on the military regimes of Korea (Park Chung Hee, 1961-1988; Chun Doo-hwan, 1980-1988) to supplement your argument. I do not want a mere summary of the film, but rather a balanced argument that reflects your critical thinking based on an analysis of the film.
