The Funeral Oration provides substantial evidence on the main features of the Athenian Democracy. The Pericles’ Funeral Oration was a speech by an Athenian politician by the name Pericles. The speech was delivered to mark the Peloponnesian war at the end of the first year. The statement was meant to honor the heroes who died in the war who lived and died fighting for the freedom of Athens.
Pericles described the system of government of Athens as being virtuous and unique (Kagan 79). Athenian’s democracy was brought out by Pericles as a system of government that advancement of men is not based on wealth but merit. Anybody had a fair chance of leading the people of Athens so long as he was capable. In other words, the wealth or class of a person was not a determinant of leadership.
