Working Title: Physicians should not Treat Family Members
Working Thesis: Dr. Pualin Whittier’s desire to protect her daughter following the demise of her husband and son in an accident led her to diagnose Maddy with a factitious disease that enabled her to deny Maddy freedom, convince Maddy that she was the only one who could treat her, and prevent her from accepting the truth.
Supporting Ideas:
1 A diagnosis of Severe Combined Autoimmune disorder gives Dr. Paulin the right to deny Maddy the right to interact with the outside world.
1 After diagnosing her with a factitious disease, Maddy’s mother limit her freedom on the basis that going outside would exacerbate her condition
2 The fear of losing her daughter made Dr. Paulin Whittier diagnose her daughter with a condition that would allow her to keep Maddy in a sterile condition.
3 Rahayu and Wulan note that Dr. Paulin makes sure that Maddy exists in isolation from the world (82).
2 Dr. Paulin's vocation as a physician and the ability to act professionally when treating Maddy made it easy for Maddy to believe that she had a severe illness.
4 Dr. Paulin carries herself just like a doctor, but her conflict of interest means she makes the decision that allows her to control Maddy.
5 Sandler and Sandler observe that individuals with repressed memory are likely to struggle with making objective decisions as the repressed memories could interfere with their ability to arrive at objective decisions (165).
6 When Maddy discovers the truth, Dr. Paulin dismisses it as a mistake in an attempt to present herself as a professional doctor who was conversant with Maddy’s condition (Richer 781).
3 When Maddy receives results suggesting that she did not have SCID, her mother rejects the results without seeking any confirmation.
7 Though lab results from a Hawaiian doctor indicate that Maddy does not have SCID, her mother denies the truth.
8 Attachment issues cause Dr. Whittier to reject any suggestions that Maddy is not sick, as she cannot view the case objectively.
9 Maddy’s nurse, Carla is more invites the possibility that Maddy is not sick more readily than Maddy’s mother does.
