Why the Subject Is Interesting
The subject of structural chemistry is interesting since it has resulted in the discovery of several drugs that only differ in functional groups or a single atom replacement. In medicine, these drugs are known as analogs or drugs that are structurally similar but elicit different biological activities. Structural studies of drugs is also an important area in bioinformatics and chemical synthesis where drugs can be visualized and altered to confer them different pharmacological properties.
