COVID-19 brought about changes that were unprecedented. No one was prepared for the inevitable life-altering decisions that the entire world had to make. Borders were closed, and loved ones were separated. There are many instances when a parent could not gain access to their child or vice-versa. I remember an example of a father whose daughter, a nurse, had contracted COVID-19. All the father could do was drive by her window and check on her from the tarmac. The scene was sad and made me cry. The world was turned upside down, and no sector was left behind. As a student, I did not think that my life would change much when COVID-19 was first announced. However, as the measures started to be effected, I soon realized that my life was never going to be the same. All of a sudden, schools were closed indefinitely, and students were asked to go back home. One of the things that many people do not know is that college offers students a lot of advantages. For example, we get to develop socially, have our perspectives enhanced, and find ourselves (we get to know who we truly are). However, college education was cut short this time around, and soon remote learning was the only option for students. The changes in college education greatly impacted learning, and it is unclear whether life will ever be the same for us. Provided herein is an essay that discusses the impact COVID-19 has had on college education and the future implications of the same.
First of all, COVID-19 led to the suspension of all in-person classes. When the government introduced the COVID-19 prevention measures, schools moved fast to send their students back home. The situation was bad for international students who were forced to take rushed flights back home. Eventually, schools decided to resume studies, and remote learning became the only option available. However, remote learning has its disadvantages. Many students felt that it lacked in many ways. For example, 51% of students noted that “less interaction with instructors is a negative of remote learning” (How College Students Are Dealing with Covid-19, 1). In-person classes made it easier for students to ask questions and have lengthy interactions with their instructors. A student named Annabel from Maryland indicated that with remote learning, there is “less academic support” for the students (How College Students Are Dealing with Covid-19, 1). Inadvertently this means that students do not have opportunities to inquire further, seek clarification, or engage teachers.
