Why no umbrellas in military uniform policy need to be changed
The policy of not carrying umbrellas while in the Army Uniform in the US Military is contained in the rules regarding Army Service Uniform guidelines. This rule stipulates that army officers are not allowed to carry umbrellas while in formations regardless the state of the weather. The officers are not allowed to carry umbrellas when wearing field and utility uniforms since this according to the laws of military is unauthorized. As per the rules of the military, only female soldiers are allowed to carry only black umbrellas in occasions when wearing the dress blue American Service Uniform. Many researchers and learners on military issues have argued differently about this policy which they term to being a violation of human rights. This is due to the fact that the health of the soldiers is very important for them to serve the nation in a diligent manner.
According to the policy black umbrellas are allowed only for the female soldiers only during inclement weather in certain uniform as defined by the policy. The male officers are not allowed to use umbrellas at all times regardless of the weather or type of the uniform in duty or formations. This policy can be argued to be lacking ethical practice and failure on the protection of the health of military soldiers. According to the regulations of the Marine Corps the Marines are not allowed to carry an umbrella and it will be a breach of the regulation to be requested by anyone including the President of the United States to carry an umbrella for them without the approval of the Commandant of the Marine Corps. The policy rules out the carrying of umbrellas by male soldiers when in uniform regardless of the weather. Female Marines may carry the all-black plain and standard umbrellas when only toned in dress uniforms.
There are situations that Marines have been photographed carrying umbrella especially for the President of the United States. These situations have been criticized in various circles especially by retired army Lieutenant. For instance in May 2013 a former US Air Force Lieutenant blasted the US President claiming that he lacked respect for the Marine Corps protocol when he ordered Marines to hold umbrellas when he was addressing a press conference. The protocol not to carry umbrellas for the military officers even in harsh weather is a matter which should be rechecked. According to the respected retired general, the President made the Marines look like butlers due to the protocol being violated. However from a humanity view it will be difficult to understand the essence of such a protocol since it does not safeguard the health of the officers.
The duty of the soldiers and other officers of the disciplined forces are to protect the nation and citizens together with ensuring there is law and order. Their wellness is important as is the work that they do, thus the need to such some of the regulations that are retrogressive and demean their health.
