Social media is part of the day-to-day lives of young people. Although there have been debates discrediting the value of social media, the audience in these communities has increased exponentially. It has been argued that spending many hours on social media drains one’s creativity. Social media drains the creativity of people because they spend many hours browsing through the sites and lack time to harness their abilities.
Creativity is the ability to generate unique and novel ideas that are relevant or useful to society. These novel ideas are specifically useful for different disciplines, such as marketing and advertisement. Technology and the internet have transformed the behavior of consumers, media, and companies. As changes continue to increase, there is a need for creative ideas that will assist in addressing the emerging challenges. For thousands of years, creativity has been crucial in designing and maintaining a competitive advantage. In the modern society that is mediated by the internet, especially the overuse of social media, many people have not harnessed their creative potential.

People involved in research, communications, website development, strategy development, customer service, require creative skills to ensure that they remain relevant in their diverse professions. However, as people spend more time on social media, there is an associated decrease in individual creative intuitions. Every post they make on social media is intended to attract attention and requires them to invest time to respond to comments, see who has liked, or how many people have shared the post.
