HOW MEDICINE CONSTRUCTS ITS OBJECTS
In his book Medicine Rationality Experience, Byron explains the critical changes in medical students’ minds as they learn to become medical professionals, the practices that facilitate this transformation, and how this transformation is accomplished in practice. He raises a new and different point of view in the field of medicine; stating that learning medicine is not simply the incorporation of new knowledge and information in the minds of the medical students but is the complete immersion of the students into a new distinctive reality of life (Byron 70). Unlike in college, where there is a reduced engagement of the learners with the subject information, medical students have to interact directly with the information they learn. Medical students are caught up in an alternate reality, and inevitably, this leads to major changes in the minds of these students.
Byron posits that medicine formulates the human body and disease in a culturally distinctive fashion (Byron 66). Learning for medical students is structured to inspire changes in how the students see things. The minds are programmed to think anatomically, to see structure where none exists. With intense practice, experience, and profound changes in visual perception, the students can recognize intricate patterns and past indistinguishable body structures such as veins, arteries, nerves, and lymphatic tissues. Additionally, crucial changes in writing and speaking occur over time in the mind of medical students. Students are taught how to write about the important details of a patient’s health and history and to be able to present this information logically and concisely in a way that the information can easily be read by and understood by other physicians.
